Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common virus that can affect different parts of your body. There are over 100 types of HPV, including strains of HPV that cause warts on your hands, feet, face, etc. About 30 HPV strains can affect your genitals, including your vulva, vagina, cervix, penis and scrotum, as well as your rectum and anus. Hpv infection is a viral infection that commonly causes skin or mucous membrane growths (warts). There are more than 100 varieties of human papillomavirus (HPV). Some types of HPV infection cause warts, and some can cause different types of cancer. Most HPV infections don’t lead to cancer.

Hpv can cause cervical and other cancers, including cancer of the vulva, vagina, penis, or anus. It can also cause cancer in the back of the throat (called oropharyngeal cancer). This can include the base of the tongue and tonsils.

Cancer often takes years, even decades, to develop after a person gets HPV. Hpv test results: What positive and negative results on a screening test mean. Hpv test results show whether high-risk HPV types were found in cervical cells. An HPV test will come back as a negative test result or a positive test result. Negative HPV test result: High-risk HPV was not found.

You should have the next test in 5 years. There are 14 high-risk HPV types that are detected in over 99% of cervical cancers. 2,3 Two HPV types, HPV 16 and HPV 18, are associated with 70% of all cervical cancers. 3 HPV 16 causes approximately 55% to 60% of cervical cancer cases, and HPV 18 accounts for 10% to 15%. Research has found that it can take 10 to 20 years, or even longer, for HPV-infected cervical cells to develop into a cancerous tumor. Among women whose cervical cells are infected with high-risk HPV, several factors increase the chance that the infection will be long lasting and lead to precancerous cervical cells. Almost 80% of the world’s population is exposed by the age of 50. Hpv can cause oropharyngeal, genital, and anal cancers. It also causes genital warts.

There is no cure for HPV but vaccines are available to prevent infection by the most common HPV viruses; unfortunately, usage is low. Most people will clear HPV spontaneously. Warts are a type of skin infection caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). The infection causes rough, skin-colored bumps to form on the skin. The virus is contagious. You can get warts from touching someone who has them. Warts most commonly appear on the hands, but they can also affect the feet, face, genitals and knees. A 2-dose schedule is recommended for people who get the first dose before their 15th birthday. In a 2-dose series, the second dose should be given 6–12 months after the first dose (0, 6–12-month schedule).

Hpv infection occurs when the virus enters your body, usually through a cut, abrasion or small tear in your skin. The virus is transferred primarily by skin-to-skin contact. Genital HPV infections are contracted through sexual intercourse, anal sex and other skin-to-skin contact in the genital region. It mostly spreads through oral sex or mouth-to-mouth contact. People with oral HPV don’t often have symptoms. For this reason, people can spread the virus without realizing it. Oral HPV can potentially turn into oropharyngeal cancer, though this is rare. The best prevention is vaccination. A 2-dose schedule is recommended for people who get the first dose before their 15th birthday. In a 2-dose series, the second dose should be given 6–12 months after the first dose (0, 6–12-month schedule). The minimum interval is 5 months between the first and second dose. The cervix is the opening to your womb from your vagina. It’s not a test for cancer, it’s a test to help prevent cancer.
